Review
Do Patti is a gripping psychological drama that delves into the dark corners of domestic abuse, family rivalry, and the quest for justice. Set in the scenic but tension-filled village of Devipur, Uttarakhand, the film centers around Saumya, a woman trapped in a physically and emotionally abusive marriage with Dhruv, a manipulative and violent man who is the son of a minister and owner of a paragliding company in Devipur, . Through a layered narrative, we are introduced to complex family dynamics, primarily the strained relationship between Saumya and her identical twin sister, Shailee. It can be seen in the movie that Shaliee possess her own resentment and jealousy because of all the focus and care that was given to Saumya due to numerous phobias and mental health issues since their mother’s death. Saumya has always been prioritised, which now fuels Shailee’s resentment.
The film’s greatest strength lies in its ability to weave together multiple perspectives. The story begins with Saumya accusing Dhruv of attempting to kill her, setting off a series of flashbacks that explore the history of abuse, familial expectations, and Saumya’s internal conflict. While Dhruv initially appears to be the typical villain, the film masterfully unravels the motive behind Saumya and Shailee’s actions, ultimately revealing the devastating effects of their shared trauma.
The performances are commendable, particularly by the lead actress Kriti Sanon portraying Saumya, who captures the emotional vulnerability and inner turmoil of a woman caught in an abusive relationship. The character of VJ played by Kajol is a strong yet morally unsure police officer, adds complexity to the story. She makes us question what justice really means as she reflects on the case and her own feelings about it.
Although , the film’s handling of the moral complexities and emotional weight of domestic violence might not resonate with all viewers. The film relies too heavily on its shocking twists and reveals rather than fully exploring the psychological depth of its characters. Characters, especially the villains, might seem a bit too simple or predictable. Their actions are not always fully explained, so they can appear as if they are just there to serve the plot, without much depth or complexity. This can make them feel less realistic.
Despite all this the film Do Patti successfully explores the complex themes of domestic violence, moral ambiguity, and justice, which are its core strengths. It challenges viewers to think about the gray areas of right and wrong, showing that the emotional and psychological aspects of abuse and justice can be complicated.
Message
The movie delivers a powerful message about the complexities of domestic violence, justice, and moral choices. At its core, it shows how deeply abuse can affect not just the victim but everyone involved, including family members and society. Saumya’s silence and her internal struggle reflect the fear, shame, and confusion that often prevent victims from speaking out. The rivalry between Saumya and her twin sister, Shailee, highlights how unresolved family tensions and mental health issues can amplify the cycle of trauma. The film also challenges the traditional notion of justice, as police officer VJ grapples with the case’s moral dilemmas. While the law demands clear evidence, the emotional truths behind the abuse are far more complicated. The movie suggests that sometimes, the legal route doesn’t provide complete justice because it fails to account for the human experience and the psychological scars left by years of suffering. Ultimately, it calls attention to the societal impact of domestic violence, urging viewers to recognize it as not just a private issue but a public one that demands awareness and action. Through Saumya’s journey, the film stresses the importance of finding closure and healing, while also questioning the cost of seeking justice in such a deeply flawed system.
